House on Haunted HillI don't know exactly when the horror movie remake phase started in Hollywood but I think we can all agree that is hasn't been a very pleasant experience for the most part.
This was probably one of the earlier remakes and wasn't nearly as horrible as I expected it to be.
The movie is really a pretty generic horror movie, what makes it good however is how much it seems to take from the original. Although the movie plays out completely differently its the small nods to the first one that makes it great. There are also a few interesting twists and the black guy, surprisingly, doesn't die first. The cast is decent and a few of the actors have gone on to bigger and better things, Famke Janssen and Geoffrey Rush in particular.
I was not scared once during the movie simply because I'm so used to the style of these modern horror movies. Its still a decent watch and more satisfying after having seen the original.
I'd just like to point out how horrible the poster to this movie is compared to the originals.
